I went on a tour of the town today, and wandered through the chinatown area first, and then along th river bank, finding myself at the jetty for the river cruise. I took this, which gave a different view of the town than just the streets could afford.
After the river cruise I explored the Dutch fort by the riverside, and then headed to the tourist information center to meet up with some others from the hostel, with a view to going to Kampung Morten for the free tour there.
We discovered that the registration took place at Kampung Morten and not the Tourist Information center, so we made our way as fast as we could, as it was almost time to start!
We made it just in time, and got our names down, then learned the history of the Kampung. It had been set up as a land and culture preservation excercise, and divided in to 100 plots that could be paid off, allowing the locals to get a plot and build traditional Malay homes in the area. It had originally been swamp land that was then reclaimed. As the project was facilitated by Mr Morten, when it came to name the Kampung they agreed to use his name for it.
We were shown the traditional houses and traditional way of life for the people there, which they still maintain. We also got to try some Banana fritters, and then were shown to a place where one local has been making replica houses of different styles from the different states in Malaysia.
After the tour, we made our way back to the hostel and then the Shikh Temple to get some food.
